Morning

Gorgeous Green Smoothie

Don and I have a smoothie for breakfast almost every morning. It’s the easiest, quickest and most delicious way to munch our dark leafy greens – along with berries, ground flax and even cruciferous vegetables. Yes, you heard right! With a high-speed blender, like an Omniblend or a Vitamix, you can add almost any veggie to your smoothie and the blades will grind it up into a luxurious liquid.

Beetroot is brilliant in chocolate or berry smoothies and frozen cauliflower creates a super creamy texture. To add more greens into our green smoothies, we often use broccoli or frozen peas. It sounds ridiculous, but I promise it works – and tastes great! Just be sure to balance the earthiness of the veggies with sweet, ripe fruits like bananas and dates.

It is interesting to notice how our taste buds develop. When Don and I started drinking green smoothies, we almost couldn’t stand the tart and bitter taste of spinach and only added a few loose baby leaves. As we became accustomed to the taste, we added bigger heaps, and by now we pack my Omniblend jar up to the brim. Be patient with yourself and ensure your smoothies are healthy, yet yummy! You definitely can’t start a good day off with a breakie you didn’t enjoy.

Notes

If you don't have all of the ingredients, use what you have in the fridge and freezer! Play with broccoli, cauliflower, peas, sweet potato, pineapple, apple, kiwi or your favourite variety of veggies fruits. Also, if you don't have a high-speed blender, soak the dates in hot water / microwave it in water for a few minutes until the dates are soft. Just don't add the hot date water to your smoothie!
