Fire up the braai for these irresistible tofu skewers—creamy, slightly sweet, and full of smoky flavour. Tofu is the perfect plant-based protein for the grill, but make sure to use extra-firm tofu so the chunks hold their shape on the skewers. You can mix and match the veggies based on what you have on hand—just stick to soft vegetables that cook at the same speed, and cut everything into similar-sized pieces for even grilling. No access to a braai? No problem. Simply marinate the tofu and veggies and toss them in a hot pan for a quick stir-fry—just add a little cornstarch to the marinade for that golden, crispy coating.
Drain the liquid from the tofu and pat dry. Cut the tofu into bite-size cubes: 2cm x 2cm x 1cm. Place the tofu cubes on a piece of kitchen towel, cover with another piece of kitchen towel and place a heavy object, like a book, on top to drain the tofu. Change the kitchen towel if you see it becomes very wet. Place the wooden sosatie skewers in a bowl of water (this is to prevent the skewers from burning on the fire). Mix all the marinade ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Remove the sosatie skewers and stack them with the vegetables and tofu (add two of each and alternate between the veggies and tofu) Place the skewers in a casserole, make sure they fit in next to each other, and cover with the marinade for 30 minutes. Braai the skewers over hot coals, turning regularly and brushing the marinade over the skewers as they cook. Leave a little bit of the marinade to brush over after braaing. When the vegetables have softened (even lightly charred) and the tofu is golden, remove from the braai and place on a serving platter. Pour the remaining marinade over the skewers and serve.
